The Riverton “PanHandlers” Steel Drum Band performs popular music as well as traditional Calypso & Soca (Soul+Calypso) from the islands of Trinidad and Tobago. Participation is limited to instrumentation, and preference is given to percussion students. However, non-percussionists have participated during each year of the group’s existence. Students who own their own instrument are welcome to play in the group, regardless of their level of previous experience or ability. All rehearsals take place outside of the regular school day and, once accepted, participating students must commit to attendance at weekly rehearsals or risk losing their spot in the band. The PanHandlers will perform at the Utah Steel Band Festival (sponsored by PAS), school concerts, private parties, and public relations events throughout the second half of the year. There is no fee to participate, but participants will purchase their own uniform.
